Question
I'm trying to get a good fundamental understanding of the differences between...
(1) Squirrel-Cage Induction Motors (Squirrel-Cage Rotor Windings) AND (2) Wound-Rotor Induction Motors (Wound-Rotor Windings)
Would someone be able to provide a list of the differences/similarities with accompanying clarifying drawings or pictures?
NOTE: This isn't for some class assignment this is for my personal understanding. Therefore if you can communicate adequately the differences and similarities and how it works I will award a positive review.
Explanation / Answer
- the 3-phase induction motors are of two types namely squirrel cage and wound rotor or slip ring induction motors.
- both the motors operate on the same principle and the same stator construction but differ in rotor construction.
-the rotor of the squirrel cage induction motor is of squrrel cage type while slip ring induction motor employs wound rotor.
-the slip ring induction motors are less extensively used than squirrel cage type because of their first cost and greater maintenance cost.
- the slip ring induction motors are employed only when speed control or high starting torque is required.
