Please answer the 5 questions for the casting process!!

The purpose of this case study is to investigate the interrelationship between material properties and manufacturing processes. Specifically, you should focus on how the behavior and properties of a material are modified by a manufacturing process. For example, a machining process may induce compressive residual stresses and thus increase the component's fatigue life, a forming process may enhance the strength of a component so that a light weight component can be used, etc. Below is a list of manufacturing processes for your reference. Some questions are also given to guide your study. Manufacturing processes turning, milling, grinding welding, forming, casting heat treatment surface enhancement processes: low plasticity burnishing, shot peening. laser shot peening Questions to answer What is the manufacturing process you are investigating and how does it work? What are the main operating conditions that can be controlled? What is the material property you are considering? How do operating conditions affect the residual stress and why? What guidelines would you recommend in selecting the conditions based on your findings?

Explanation / Answer

1) heat treatment. it main principle is to remove the internal residual stresses induced due to machining process. Inorder to enhance a machined product life and sustain for long load duration, this heat treatment process is very helpful

2) the main operating conditions that can be controlled are the temperature and rate of cooling.

3)Many properties can be enhanced by this heat treatment process such as ductility, hardness, machinability, toughness, malleability, etc.,

4) By heating the material until its recrystallization temperature makes the atoms in the material to set free and provide them to rearrange upon the duration of cooling. At high recrystallization temperatures, the material is rolled to remove the internal stresses induced in it and the same time, results in increase of the length. this enhances the ductility property

similarly, cooling at faster rates will result in hard materials which help in improving hardness of the material. and cooling at slower rates will result in soft materials by improving the machinability of the material and improve the shock absorbing capacity.

5) the basic guidelines that are recommended in selecting the conditions based the materials we find are that whether the material can withstand enough temperature to the heat treatment process. this can be done by reading the basic properties of the material we have chosen such as melting point, recrystallization temperature, incubation period (time taken for grain resetting) etc
