Question

A rectangular loop is placed near a long wire carrying acurrent I. If current I decreases in time, what can be saidof the current induced in the loop? a. the current has a direction that depends on the sizeof the loop b. the current is clockwise c. the current is counterclockwise d. the current is zero e. the magnitude of the current depends on the size ofthe loop There is a box with R at the top center then below it is:     <------   I ______________________________________ A rectangular loop is placed near a long wire carrying acurrent I. Explanation / Answer

According to Lenz’s law the direction of induced currentin the coil is such that it produces a magnetic field opposite tothat produced by the current in the wire.

As the current in the wire is to the left and decreasing, therefore the magnetic field produced by this current is in to theplane of the paper and decreasing. So the magnetic field producedby the induced current should be in to the plane of the paper. Therefore the induced current should be clockwise.

Also the magnitude of current depends on the size of theloop.
