Question

I need help with the question from high school physics 1course: Monochromatic light passes through a single slit with a widthof 0.010 cm and falls on a screen 82cm away. If the distance fromthe center of the pattern to the first band is 0.60cm, what is thewavelength of the light?       answer needs to be in nm it would be helpful to have to steps this problem and theanswer! thank you !! Explanation / Answer

we have single slit of width d = 0.010*10-2m the distance from the slit to the screen L =82*10-2m the distance from one side of thecentral maximum to thefirst minimum is Y = 0.60*10-2m    we hav the condition for darkness as     dsin = m for first minimum as     dsin =        sin = /d we also have    tan = Y/L as is small so, tan ˜ sin     / d = Y/L       = Y*d / L          =0.60*10-2m* 0.010*10-2m /82*10-2m           =731.7nm Hope this may help you.
