The very left one being number 1 and the very right one beingnumber 4. Just click the thumbnail, it'll take you the picture, butthere will be a broken image, just click the broken image and itwill let you download the image and you can view that way. I wouldprefer you view the problems in that manner just because i may havemade mistakes when typing it out and plus there are picturesprovided. Thank you.
QUESTION: 1
1. A river of uniform width, w, flows straight in thedirection from west to east at a steady speed u. P is apier on the south bank of the river. Q is a pier on the north bankof the river directly across. R is another pier on the northbank of the river a distance of w/2 east of Q(cf. figure 1). A boat starts at P and travels with a constant speed v relative tothe flowing water, but always pointing directly towards Q. Show that (i) if v < u, then the boat will be swept down streamand never quite reach the north bank, (ii) if v > u, then theboat will arrive in finite time at Q from the east, and (iii)if v = u, then the boat will follow a parabolic trajectory andapproach R from the south but never quite reach it.
QUESTION: 2
Assume that the mass of the entire yo-yo is M, the outerradius is a, the core radius is b, the moment of inertia about thecenter is I, the coefficient of static friction between the yo-yoand the table at the contact point is Us(U sub s), and thecoefficient of kinetic friction is Uk(U sub k). If the yo-yodoes not leave the table in its subsequent motion, the magnitude,F, of the force F, has to be less thana certain maximum. Find thismaximum value of F, Fmax. For the full range of values of Ffrom 0 to Fmax, describe the subsequent motion of the yo-yoquantitatively.
QUESTION 3:
Figure 3 shows a plane circular disk of radius R, with a circularhole centered a distance a away fromt eh center of the disc. The radius of teh hole is r < R - a. This disc has mass Mand negligible thickness. Find the moment of inertia aboutthe chord PQ on the circular disk that passes through the center ofmass of the disc, G, and is perpendicular to the diameter RS thatpartitions the disc into two symmetric portions.
....and last but not least QUESTION: 4
A piece of wire of negligible mass is bent into the shape of aprofile of a step. the middle verticle section is of heighth, and the twol horizontal sections connected to its ends are bothof length l, (cf. figure 4). Two equal point masses, m, areattached to the ends of the wire. The entire 'kineticsculpture' is rotated about the vertical section of the wire at asteady speed w (omega). Calculate the torque needed to maintainthis motion of steady angular speed.
