Question

Part A is giving me some difficulty. It keeps telling me theanswer is incorrect.

A block of mass m = 0.640 kgis fastened to an unstrained horizontal spring whose springconstant is k = 65.0 N/m. Theblock is given a displacement of +0.120 m, where the + signindicates that the displacement is along the +x axis, andthen released from rest.

(a) What is the force (magnitude and direction) that the springexerts on the block just before the block is released?
This was my equation: mg+kx=F
6.40kg*9.8+65N/m*.120m=F
F=14.072

My answer is apparently incorrect. Please help me understandwhy.

Explanation / Answer

Thanks. I got 7.8 but I didn't realize that it wasnegative.
