You hit the gound with same momentum,whether knees are bent or not. Force = changein momentum / time When knees are not bent, legs experiencegreater force as the time over which momentum is reduced to zero isvery small. On bending the knees, although change inmomentum remains the same, time is greately increased. This resultsin less force and hence less hurting.
