Question
I'm working on a lab about the citric acid cycle. The presentation I had to watch on the citric acid cycle stated the two main purposes of the cycle are:
1. Increase the cell's ATP producing potential. and 2. Provide the cell with precursors that can be used to build a variety of molecules, depending on the cell's needs.
I'm getting stuck on this question: Why is fulfilling these purposes so important? or in other words, what relevance do these purposes have to someone not enrolled in a biochemistry class?
Explanation / Answer
We all need energy, all know that for doing any work, or do nothing, and just for respiration we all need energy, our body uses energy for almost all types of job it takes, heart beating, brain function, nerve impluse, and many more need constant supply of energy. This energy comes from ATP Adenosine TriPhosphate. One of most important molecule in body, considered to be like currency of the body. Whenever ATP is concerted to ADP or AMP it looses pyruvate group from it and releases enery, this same energy is utlized by all organs, cells to carry out their functions.
So Now we understood the importance of ATP, and something so important should be maintined in our body, ATP are produced maininly by Citric acid cycle or krebs cycle. One successful cycle of citric acid cycle produces almost 12 ATP molecues.
B.) In the process of citric acid cycle, apart fromproducing ATP, this cycle also produce many variety of molecules which will be utlized for production of different types of molecules, these acts like precussor for them. It includes carbohydrate, fat, and protein metabolism.
Many amino acids are produced, and after transamination enter into some or other point in this cycle.
Via citric acid cycle HEME is produced, one of the precussor for the citric acid cycle hels in production of HEME, succinyl coA and Aspartate from OAA are precussor for HEME production.
