A two-slit experiment is carried out with monochromatic light(single wavelength). The linear distance on the screen fromthe central bright spot (zero-order peak) to the first bright spot(first-order peak) next to it is measured to be x. The entireapparatus is then submerged in water and the distancere-measured. We find that the distance x increases.

If this statement is true, prove it. If false, show why it isfalse.

The linear distance on the screen from the central bright spot(zero-order peak) to the first bright spot (first-order peak) nextto it is measured to be x So, the linear distance on the screen from the central brightspot (zero-order peak) to the first bright spot (first-order peak)next when submerged in water is = x / n                                                   = x / (4 / 3 )                                                   = 3x / 4      Since index of refraction ofwater = 4/ 3 So, the statement is false.
