Question
Greetings,The problem states: The force on gravity on anyobject due to earth is given by the equation F=G (M.M/r^2). If arocket weighs 3.6 E 6 N at the surface of the earth what is theforce on the rocket due to gravity when the rocket has reached analtitude of 1.2 E 4 km? G= 6.67 E -11 Nm^2/kg^2, radius of theearth = 6370 km, mass of the earth = 5.98 E 24 Kg.
The answer is: 4.3 E 5 N
The solution states: If you are good withscientific notation, it is easy to see that r is tripled. r is thedistance from the center of the Earth to the earth's surface. TheSatellite is two Earth radii from the surface of the Earth, so itis three Earth radii from the center of the earth. Since the squareof r is inversely proportional to F, F must be divided by 9.
I am confused. May someone show me how to do this problem easilyusing proportions and without a calculator with the calculations? Iwill rate lifesaver.
Thanks.
