Blood pressure versus blood velocity changes in the circulatory system.

Blood flows through the circulatory system because of the pressure difference created by the pumping of the heart.Soon after the blood leaves the heart, the pressure is very high and it decreases gradually as it passes through the body. A greater difference in pressure results in a greater velocity assuming all else remains equal, so when increased blood flow is required the heart can pump more quickly and also in larger volume.

The pressure exerted by the proteins in the blood is called oncotic pressure. This pressure tends to pull water into the circulatory system. The oncotic pressure pulls fluid into the cappilaries. When there is protein loss from the blood i.e proteinuria or malnutrition, there will be decrease in oncotic pressure resulting in excess fluid loss from capillaries and fluid retention in the tissues..
