Question

Consider the circuit shown below.

I need to learn how to do these problems. Please write the equations with the variables, state what the variables stand for, and plug in the values. Explain why you are using those equations.

I can usually find Req fine, most of my troubles come after that (though please do thoroughly explain Req).

Thanks!

Consider the circuit shown in the figure below. (Let R = 40.0 Ohm.) Find the current in the 40.0-Ohm resistor. A Find the potential difference between points a and b. V

Explanation / Answer

Around the outside, the 5 Ohm and the 40 Ohm are in series, so R = 5 + 40 = 45 Ohms

That 45 is in parallel with the other 5 Ohm and the 10 Ohms resistor

1/R = 1/45 + 1/5 + 1/10

R = 3.10 Ohms

That is in series with the 10 Ohm by the battery

R = 10 + 3.1 = 13.1 Ohms

Then apply V = IR for the circuit

25 = I(13.1)

I = 1.098 Amps

The voltage in the 3.01 Ohm Section is from V = IR

V = (1.098)(3.10)

V = 5.91 V

The cirrect going through the outside with the 40 Ohm and the 5 Ohm is

V = IR

5.91 = I(45)

I = .131 Amps

Thus, across the 40 Ohm reisitor, we have .131 Amps

Part B)

This was found in the previous part...

V = 5.91 V
