Question
In your own words, explain why malfunctioning of the hypothalamus can affect fertility in both males and females. DO NOT focus on a specific condition of the hypothalamus and its symptoms. Instead, think about the role the hypothalamus plays in the reproductive system. Identify at least one effect that a malfunctioning hypothalamus could have on the male reproductive system AND at least one effect that a malfunctioning hypothalamus could have on the female reproductive system. Explain your reasoning by describing how each effect could affect fertility.
Explanation / Answer
Hypothalamus releases the gonadotropic releasing hormone (GnRH), which acts on anterior pituitary to release the LH and FSH that are necessary for the maturation and release of ovum and sperms in female and males respectively. During the malfunctioning of hypothalamus, the release of GnRH from the hypothalamus decreases or inhibited. This results in failure of anterior pituitary to release the FSH and LH. Without these hormones, the ovum cannot be matured and released in females. Also, the production of testosterone decreases. For example, in case of females, FSH is needed for follicular development and LH surge is needed for ovulation to occur. Thus, both are inhibited in the absence of these hormones and causes infertility.
