Question

Physics 110 Journal-Fall 2017 Lesson 38 Pre-Class Problem STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM A space probe is sent to a distant planet to determine if it is suitable for colonization. After having successfully met all the other criteria one remaining test exists: is the gravitational pull of the planet within 30.0% of Earth's normal gravity? The probe contains a simple pendulum which it uses to determine the gravitational constant at the surface of that planet. The compact pendulum is only 5.0 cm long and it takes 0.33 seconds to move from the left most part of its swing to the center of its swing Is the planet suitable for colonization? Ap 033 s Answer: no, since glaner 1.1 m/s2 Documentation Statement: 192

Explanation / Answer

Period of one oscillation,

T = 0.33*4 = 1.32 s

l = 0.05 m

Formula for period of simple pendulum,

T = 2*pi*sqrt (l / g)

1.32 = 2*3.14*sqrt (0.05 / g)

gnew = 1.14 m/s^2

gravitational constant for earth = 9.8 m/s^2

gravitational pull is not within 30 % of earth's gravity. Hence, planet is not suitable for colonization.
