Question

In the context of Signalised intersections:

I have two formulas for "Degree of Saturation"

1)                     v/c                   saturation/capacity

2)                     y/u                   flow ratio/green time ratio

                                                 (flow ratio = arrival flow/saturation flow) & green time ratio = displayed green time/ cycle time)

Both Share the symbol "X", however I don't see how they are the same. Can someone explain this please?

Explanation / Answer

traffic engineering:

x = degree of saturation,

x = (q/S) / (g/c), or

x = q/C

q = arrival flow rate (veh/sec)

S = departure (saturation) flow rate from queue during effective green (veh/sec)

g = effective green time (sec)

c = cycle length (sec)

C= capacity rate (veh/sec, or veh/cycle, or veh/h)

i think this gives you some explanation.
