Question

Part B and part C are asking me to choose either capacitors and inductors to place in series to reach resonance of the element at 1.9GHz. I however am unsure which one is more appropriate to use. Couldnt resonance be achieved choosing either one? Please explain especially if one is better than the other and why. Will rate 5 stars quickly for best answer! Thanks!

The problem I'm working on is:

A lambda /2 dipole is used as a radiating element while it is connected to a 50-ohm lossless transmission line. It is desired to resonate the element at 1.9GHz by placing in series capacitor(s) or inductor(s) (whichever are appropriate) at its input terminals. Determine the following:

Explanation / Answer

B) here capacitor has to be used. because, the capacitor gives the negative impedance that cancels the positive impedance of system (since the imaginary term is positive). Thus resonance occurs.

the impedance magnitude due to the additional capacitor should match with that of the imaginary term of the existing impedance.

C) this is similar to that of above case, where the total impedance due to both the capacitors should match with that of imaginary term of the existing impedance. Here the capacitance value of each capacitor becomes double to that of above case.
