Question

Please solve all three parts

m1 = 190 lb m2 = 205 lb V1/B = 4 ft/s right arrow V2/B = 3 ft/s left arrow mB = 400 lb Question: Mass I goes to the center of the boat at a velocity of 4 ft/s, while mass z stays at its initial position, locate the new center of mass of the boat. Secondly, while mass l is positioned at the center of the boat, mass z goes to the center of the boats at the velocity of 3 ft/s, locate the new center of mass of the boat. Lastly, while M1 M2 are at the center of the boat, find the new center of the mass of the boat.

Explanation / Answer

1) 1 walks with a speed 4ft/s w.r.t. boat for a distance 10 in

=> t = 10/4*12 = 0.208s

COM moves distance d in opposite direction with speed Vcm for t time:

Vcm = 190*4 /(190+205+400) = 0.956 ft/s

=> d = 2.39 in

New COM = Old - 2.39 = (400*10+205*20)/(190+205+400) - 2.39 = 7.8 in

2) t = 10/(3*12) = 0.278 s

Vcm = - 3*205/(795) = - 0.774 ft/s

d = 2.58

New COM = 7.8 + 2.58 = 10.38

3)New COM remains at 10.38 in

All COM are measured keeping the initial position of 1 as origin.
