Question

On a table in front of the classroom, there are five empty beakers that have their respective masses measured.Two large pitchers are filled, one with cold water and the other with hot water. Each beaker is then filled to a random height with a random mixture of hot and cold water. Next, a small thermometer is used to vigorously stir the contents of each beaker. As the stirring of each beaker was completed, temperature indicated by the thermometer was recorded. The weight of each of the water-filled beakers was also recorded. Finally, the contents of the five beakers are poured into the large beaker situated at the right end of the table. The contents were immediately stirred with a very large thermometer. When the stirring was completed, the temperature was recorded.

With all the needed data on the blackboard and reproduced here, the assignment was to predict the temperature of the water that had been poured into the large beaker and read by the thermometer after stirring. This is the assignment for this problem.

Explanation / Answer

by energy balance

(0.2372 - 0.0552)*(105.2 - T) + (0.2769 - 0.0549)*(91.3 - T) + (0.1866 - 0.0546)*(40.2 - T)

+ (0.1487 - 0.0555)*(81 - T) + (0.2503 - 0.0553)*(71.4 - T) = 0

0.182*(105.2 - T) + 0.222*(91.3 -T) + 0.132*(40.2 - T) + 0.0932*(81 - T) + 0.195*(71.4 - T) = 0

19.1464 + 20.2686 + 5.3064 + 7.5492 + 13.923 = 0.8242*T

T = 66.1936 / 0.8242 = 80.31255 degree
