The following are the properties which selection of material
(I) High mechanical strength to withstand the weight of conductors and wind loads etc.
(II) Light in weight without the loss of mechanical strength.
(III) Cheap in cost and economical to maintain.
(IV) Longer life.
(V) Easy accessibility of conductors for maintenance.
The types of poles based on materials of which they are made of are as follows-
1) Wooden poles
2) Steel poles
3) Rack poles
Out of the three mentioned above, RCC poles are preferred over the rest because of the following reasons-
A) Material properties
1) Greater mechanical strength
2) Resistant to corrosion
3) Greater stability during higher wind loads.
B) Sustainability
1) Longer life and permit longer spans than steel poles.
2) Give good outlook, require little maintenance and have good insulating properties.
C) Manufacturing
1) Can be manufactured easily in multiple desired shapes due to versatility in concrete molding.
2) The only difficulty is during installation because of their heavy weight. However this is overcome by cast inset RCC poles.
D) Cost
1) Cost of an RCC pole is less as compared to steel poles .
2) However the installation cost is more. Thus RCC poles are recommended to be constructed in-situ.
