Question

The plate shown below is made of 1040 tool steel. It is subjected to a horizontal concentrated load of 1000 lbs. As a project engineer, it is your job to determine the resulting stresses and deformations in the plate.

a) Using Solidworks MCAE software, explain how you would develop the solid model for the part. Include all appropriate commands.

b) Using Solidworks Simulation, show how Finite Element Analysis can be used to determine the stresses and displacements. Explain what assumptions are being made for the simulation and discuss the steps in the method. Indicate any areas of particular interest. Include all appropriate commands.

Explanation / Answer

a) Development of the model:

1. First go to part design module.

2. Select the x-y plane and click sketch to design the 2-D model.

3. Using rectangle command draw a rectangle from the orgin (0,0) to (4,2).

4. You can also draw a rectangle and give the dimensions using the smart dimension command also.

5. Select circle comman and draw a circle of radius 0.5 in the centre of the horizontal line (the dimension of the horizontal line is 4''. so you have to draw at 2'').

6. Repeat the above step for the top horizontal line also.

7. Now click on the trim option (select power trim), and trim off all the unnecessary lines and arcs.

8. Click on exit sketch.

9. Now you will get the 2-D model. To convert this into 3-D, click on the extrude command and give the dimension to extrude as 0.5'' and click OK.

10. Thus you will get the above 3-D model.
