Question

Please show work and show where all the numbers come from so that I can see where I'm going wrong and figure out how to do other problems like this one. Thank you!

I've included a screenshot of my previous attempts in case that helps.

Two 10-cm-diameter charged disks face each other, 17 cm apart. The left disk is charged to - 50 nC and the right disk is charged to 50 nC Part A What is the electric field E, both magnitude and direction, at the midpoint between the two disks? Express your answer to two significant figures and include the appropriate units 1E1=1 Value Units Submit Previous Answers Request Answer X Incorrect; Try Again; 8 attempts remaining Part B To the left disk. To the right disk Parallel to the plane of the disks. Submit

Explanation / Answer

(A) field strength due to a charged disc,

E = (Q / 2 pi e0 R^2) [ 1 - (x / sqrt(x^2 + R^2))]

at mid point, x = 17/2 = 8.5 cm , magnitude of field due to both disc will be same.

and due to left disk, toward the disc so to the left.

due to right disk(+ve charged), away from the disc so to the right.

hence Enet = 2 E

= (50 x 10^-9 / (pi x 8.854 x 10^-12 x 0.05^2)[1 - 0.085 / sqrt(0.085^2 + 0.05^2)]

= 99272 N/C Or 9.93 x 10^4 N/C .....Ans

(B) to the left disk.

(C) F = q E

so F = (2.2 x 10^-9)(99272)

= 2.18 x 10^-4 N .......Ans

(D) F = q E

and q is negative charge so direction of force will ve opposite of field.
