Question

Mixed Review 7.121 28 of 32 Constants Part A A friend climbs an apple tree and drops a 0.22-kg apple from rest to you, standing 3.5 m below. When you catch the apple, you bring it to rest in 0.28 s What was the speed of the apple just before you caught it? Express your answer to two significant figures and include the appropriate units. ty-Value Units Submit Part B What average force did you exert on the apple to bring it to rest? (Be sure to include both the weight of the apple and the force needed to bring it to rest.) Explanation / Answer

Given

mass of apple is m = 0.22 kg

the point where the appledropped is h = 3.5 m

the apple comes to rest in time dt = 0.28 s

using equations of motions

Part A

v^2 - u^2 = 2as

u = 0 m/s

v^2 = 2*g*h

v^2 = 2*9.8*3.5

v = 8.283 m/s

Part B

Force exerted on the apple is to bring it to rest is f =?

from the equations of motions

V = u+at

here v = 0 m/s

u = 8.283 m/s

0 = 8.283 - a* 0.28

solving for a

a = 29.58 m/s2

now the force exerted on apple is

F = ma

F = 0.22*29.58 N

F = 6.5076N
