Convex Lens and Convex Mirror Problem

There are two parts where principe rays have to be drawn on the diagram and second part is below. Help is appreciated!

3. A laser technician in Dr. Evil's lair is testing some lasers before they are attached to sharks. To test the lasers, the technician has concocted an optical set up including a convex lens and a convex mirror, as shown below. The focal points (Fl Fens) of the lens as well as the focal point (F) and center (C) of the mirror are indicated in the diagram. Draw the principle rays for the total optical system. F'tens F C lens with focal length focal length 10 em and the distance from the lens to the mirror is 40 em (i) If the object is placed at do = 25 cm to the left of the lens, what is the location of the total image? What is the total magnification? (ii) Would you be able to project the total image onto a piece of paper?

Explanation / Answer

given

convex lens focal length, fl = 10 cm

convex mirror , fm = 10 cm

d = 40 cm

i. u = -25 cm

image for lens is at v'

from lens equation

1/v' - 1/u = 1/fl

v' = 16.667 cm

henec for mirror

u' = -(40 - 16.667) = -23.33 cm

1/v + 1/u' = 1/fm

v = 7 cm to the right of the mirror

total magnification = (v'/u)(-v/u') = -0.2

ii. as the final image is virtual as it is formed by convex mirror, hence this image cannot be taken on a screen
