Describe in detail the drinking water regulations including what agency or agencies regulates the water quality standards. What is the difference between National and Secondary drinking water regulations? 1. 2. Build a table to describe: a. National Primary Drinking Water Regulations for: Chlorine, Copper, Fecal Coliform and E. coli, Fluoride, Lead, Mercury, Nitrate, Nitrite, Total Coliforms and Turbidity b. National Secondary Drinking Water Regulations for: Aluminum, Chloride, Copper, Fluoride, Iron, pH, total dissolved solids, Odor, and Sulfate. Describe in detail the following phases of the Starkville Wastewater Treatment Plant (SWWTp) Preliminary treatment, Primary treatment, Secondary treatment and Tertiary treatment 3. The Starkville Wastewater Treatment Plant (SWWTP) is an activated sludge plant, class 4 facility. a. b. 4. Explain what an activated sludge process is. List the advantages and disadvantages of an activated sludge process.Explanation / Answer
1.There are many contaminants available in water like Nitrites,Organic matters, iron etc.to control these contaminants in potable water and then supply is termed as water regulation.
Different agencies identifies contaminants to regulate water to protect public health.
Different agencies regulates in many developed countries this includes the European Drinking Water Directive and in US the United States Environmental Protection Agency(EPA) established standards as required by the Safe Drinking Water Act.
For countries without administrative frework such standards established by WHO.China adopts drinking water standards enacted by Ministry of Environmental Protection.
The National Primary Drinking Water Regulation are legally enforceable primary standards and treatment techniques that apply to public water systems and protect public health by limiting the levels of contaminants in drinking water.
National Secondary Drinking Water Regulation are non-enforceable guidelines regarding contaminants that may cause cosmetic effects (such as skin or tooth discoloration) or aesthetic effects (such as taste, odor,or color) in drinking water.
2. Table of Secondary Standards
low pH : bitter metallic taste, corrosion
high pH: slippery feel,soda taste
Contaminant Secondary MCL Noticeable Effects above the Secondary MCL Aluminium 0.05 to 0.2 mg/L colored water Chloride 250 mg/L salty taste Copper 1.0 mg/L metallic taste,blue-green staining Fluoride 2.0 mg/L tooth discoloration Iron 0.3 mg/L rusty color, mettalic taste pH 6.5-8.5low pH : bitter metallic taste, corrosion
high pH: slippery feel,soda taste
Total Dissolved solids 500 mg/L hardness, deposites, colored water, salty taste. Odor 3 TON rotten-egg,or chemical smell Sulfate 250mg/L salty taste
