Question

Photosynthesis is dependent on light-harvesting molecules called pigments. The most abundant and important pigments in most leaves are chlorophylls a and b. Chlorophyll pigments predominantly absorb blue and red light, and reflect green light-this is why leaves appear green. Other pigments are present in leaves, but they are best seen in autumn when chlorophylls degrade, and the brilliant reds, yellows, and oranges of the other pigments remain to color leaves. Paper chromatography is a common technique used in chemistry to separate mixtures of different molecules. We will use chromatography to see different light- capturing pigments in spinach leaves. chlorophyllb chlorophyll a 400 500 600 700 Wavelength [nm] Figure 4. Absorbance spectra of chlorophylls a and b in a solvent. How might you use the spectrophotometer to find out the wavelengths of light at which pigments from leaves absorbs light energy? 1pt Enter your answer here

Explanation / Answer

If we analyses the spectrum given in the question as image we will get to know much information.

As

Absorption spectra demonstrating how the distinctive side chains in chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b result in somewhat extraordinary retentions of visible light. Light with a wavelength of 460 nm isn't essentially consumed by chlorophyll a, yet will rather be caught by chlorophyll b, which absorbs firmly at that wavelength. The two sorts of chlorophyll in plants supplement each other in engrossing daylight. Plants can fulfill their vitality prerequisites by engrossing light from the blue and red parts of the spectrum.

Since Chl a and Chl b is part of photosynthetic complex we can use spectrophotometer to analyses leave extract and get the spectrum for further understanding or quantification.
