Question

A rectangular channel is 4m wide and carries a discharge of 20m3/s at a depth of 2m. At a certain section it is proposed to build a hump. Calculate the water surface elevation s at upstream of the hump and over the hump if the hump height is (a) 0.33m, and (b) 0.2m. (Assume no energy loss at the hump)

Solution:

what I dont understand in this solution is how you get E2 ( 5th line down in the solutions. If someone could explain that line it would be great.

Hence the maximum height of hump that will not affect the upstream water depth is

Explanation / Answer

yeah. the change in specific energy (DelZ) is equal to the difference in specific energy. i mean (E1-E2). at the given line, the calculation was wrong. the value is 2.3186+0.2=2.5186 m.
