Question

I have to create a water vehicle that can collect objects on the surface of water in a specified time. The objective is that the vehicle is to navigate in water to collect 24 ping pong balls and store them in a floating container. The project will be evaluated in our school pool and must be placed along at least half the pool. The pool lane dividers are part of the course. It is to be made from a sea pearch kit.
I have to write about how we are going to power it and how we are going to control it. I was just wondering if anyone had some ideas to help me. We were thinking that for power we were going to do remote control and have to motors on each side to steer it for control.

Explanation / Answer

A few of my friends had a similar project except it was just moving one tennis ball into an underwater bucket. Their vessel was hardwired to a remote and battery off shore. They had three motors. One motor controlled movement in the vertical direction while the other two motors were diagonal to control movement in the x and y planes. The vehicle was made of PVC with two sytrofoam floaters. All three motors were sealed with wax and the vehicle had a mesh as a basket. A 12V standard universal battery was used to control the vehicle but it was wired so that the battery remained on the side of the pool.
