Question

Against the better judgement of your friends, and even against your own perhaps, you allow yourself to be strapped into a vertical cage in a circus ride that is made up of 36 such cages. all containing people like you, that are stacked in a horizontal circle in which the person on the other side of the circle from you is 8.0 meters from you. Once the infernal apparatus is spun up to a speed of 20 revolutions per minute, what is the number of g's that you will feel. ( "g" is a common term for expressing acceleration and is the magnitude of the acceleration of gravity on the surface of the Earth, i.e. 9.8 m/s2.)

Explanation / Answer

circular motion: acceleration = v^2 / r where v = 2pi r / time you are told it takes 3 seconds for one rev (because it does 20 in one minute), and the radius is 4.0 m (because the diam of the circle is 8.0 m) so we can calc the speed v = 2 pi 4.0 m / 3.0 sec = 8.378 m/s Now calc the acceleration a = 8.378^2 / 4.0 = 17.55 m/s^2 which is 17.55 / 9.80 = 1.79 g's
