Question

I have to find the height of the building using the elevator. The experiment stated to go up the elevator and record the mass. Then I have to find the acceleration of the elevator and with that information I have to find the height of the building. The data I collected is below but I have no clue how to use this information to find the height. How do I work this out?

@ t=0 ------ m=158grams (elevator at rest)

@ t=4------- m=206grams

It takes 38 seconds to go all the way up the evelator (20 floors)

The angle I measured outside is 55 degrees (i did use the angle and length and got the height this way but he wants use to find it using the elevator experiment.

I need help please. Please work everything out.

thanks

Explanation / Answer

See the mass of the object always remains same. Here they are referring mass as force. So we will consider this the same.
Actual mass m = 158
Changed mass = m( 1 + a/g ) = 206

Hence a = 2.98m/s^2

I feel the acceleration continues for 4 seconds only.

Hence the velocity must be 3*4 = 12m/sec.

The lift must travel for 30 seconds with the constant velocity. So the distance must be 360m.

First and last 4 seconds each contribute 0.5*3*16 = 24m

So the total height may be 408m.

Well this is also quite high u need to supply more data.
