Question

Please help! It says that I have the speed & direction after the collision of the ball initially at rest correct, but I keep getting the ball originally heading east wrong.

A ball of mass 0.340 kg moving east (+x direction) with a speed of 3.40 m/s collides head-on with a 0.500 kg ball at rest. If the collision is perfectly elastic, what will be the speed and direction of each ball after the collision?

ball originally at rest: I got 2.8m/s going east
ball originally moving east: ________ going west

Explanation / Answer

we have, 0.340 x 3.4 + 0 = 0.340 x v + 0.5 x 2.8 speed = v = -0.717 m/s speed = v = 0.717 m/s (west)
