13. A university student telephoned the state Department of Health (SDH) at 9:00 on Saturday morning believing he and his roommate (who was also his fraternity brother) had experienced food poisoning after eating the night before at an off-campus eatery As the investigator of this outbreak, identify 5 questions you would ask this student during the call in order to obtain key information with regard to this potential case of foodborne illness. (4 points) Immediately after conducting this survey, SDH received a call from a local hospital reporting that 16 students had been examined in the emergency room for acute gastroenteritis. Follow-up interviews revealed that there had been a party at an off-campus pizza parlor co-hosted by one fraternity and one sorority and a total of 130 students who attended the party were contacted in the investigation, many of whom had sought treatment at the student health center. Each student was asked if they developed symptoms of gastroenteritis, if they consumed any food or beverage at the party, as well as where they ate lunch on the day of the party. Their responses are tabulated below Attended party and ate or drank Sick 24 Total 67 28 Attended party but did not eat or drink Sick Total 21 14 Ate lunch at dining hall Ate lunch elsewhere 5 What is the gastroenteritis attack rate for students who ate lunch at the dining hall but did not eat at the party? (1 point) What is the gastroenteritis attack rate for all students who ate lunch off campus, regardless of whether they ate at the party? (1 point) What is the gastroenteritis attack rate for all students who ate/drank at the party, regardless of where they ate lunch? (1 point) What is your best guess as to the source of this disease outbreak? Do you see any problems with or do you have any concerns about the dataset? (5 points)

Explanation / Answer

5 Questions asked are:-

1)What food did you have and where did you consume it?

2) Are you suffering from any symptoms like diarrhea, stomach pain, nausea, abdominal cramps etc?

3) Do you have fever, bloody diarhea, extreme dehydration, renal or liver problems?

4) Did you get food poisoning before also while eating the same food?

4) Since when is he complaining of the pain and how severe it is?

There are 9 students who attended the party but did not eat at the party but ate in the dining hall. There are total of 130 students out of which 9 were sick and ate only in dining hall. The rate is 6.9%.

The rate of the students who has gastroenteritis attack who had lunch off campus regardless of if they ate at party or not is 6.1% as total number of students are only 8.

The rate of students who ate/drank in the party is 29. Hence the rate is 22.30%.

It cannot be ascertained to where in the root cause of the food poisoning because even for people who did not eat at the party are suffering from the food poisoning. The disease might have come from dining at the university hall as in this case it shows maximum number of students who have fallen ill. Out of 130 students, 33 students fell ill after eating at dining hall and this might be one of the causes of the food poisoning.
