Question

Can someone Please Solve this,i'm stuck.

Consider a negative electric charge moving next to a wire. In Physics 2, you learned that if current flows through the wire it will produce a magnetic field that will exert a force on the nearby electric charge. But if all velocities are relative, won't some observers say that the electron isn't moving? If some observers think that the electron is sitting still and some observers think that the electron is moving, then what will happen to the electron? Will it feel a force or not? Recall from Physics 2 that the magnetic force = q(v rightarrow times B rightarrow) so the question of whether the electron is moving is very important. Don't answer these questions yet. This paragraph is just setting up the question. Watch this Veratisium video about the relationship between special relativity, electric fields, and magnetic fields: http://voutu.bc/lTK.SfAkWWN(Ulist=UUFInvfMqiRRGlu-2MsS01.hXA Now back to our question: Wendy is at rest relative to the wire and electron. She sees a current flowing to the right in the wire. From her perspective: What type of field (electric or magnetic) will Wendy say is responsible for the deflection? Explain why she thinks that kind of field exists and why she thinks the other type of field does not exist. Use your answer to a) and ideas from Physics 2 to explain what direction she should see the electron being deflected. Elise is moving with the electron. From her perspective: What type of field will Elise say is responsible for the deflection? Explain why she thinks that kind of field exists and why she thinks the other type of field does not exist. Use your answer to c) and ideas from Physics 2 to explain what direction she should see the electron being deflected. If your deflection directions in b) and d) are not the same then you did something wrong.

Explanation / Answer

a) magnetic field

because magnetic force acts in direction perpendicular to velocity. Since there are both kind of charges in wire, it wonnt produce electric field.

b) downward, because F = qv x B where q is negative and Bxv is in upward direction because B is into the page.

c) electric field, because magnetic force will be zero as v becomes zero.

d) downward, because electric field is in upward direction.
