Question

Part A

For the capacitor network shown in the figure, find the equivalent capacitance.(Figure 1)

Express your answer to two significant figures and include the appropriate units.

Part B

Find the charge on the capacitor a) when the entire combination is connected across a 18 Vbattery.

Express your answer to two significant figures and include the appropriate units.

Part C

Find the charge on the capacitor b) when the entire combination is connected across a 18 Vbattery.

Express your answer to two significant figures and include the appropriate units.

Part D

Find the charge on the capacitor c) when the entire combination is connected across a 18 Vbattery.

Express your answer to two significant figures and include the appropriate units.

Part E

Find the charge on the capacitor d) when the entire combination is connected across a 18 Vbattery.

Express your answer to two significant figures and include the appropriate units.

Explanation / Answer

A) Equivalent capacitance = C = (a+b)II (c+d) =(0.25+0.40)II(0.35+0.5)=0.65*0.85/(0.65+0.85)=0.37F

B) and C)   Now charge across first parallel set (0.65 F) is equal to second paralell set(0.85 F) =q (say)

So, q/0.65 + q/ 0.85 =18 ==> q=6.63 C

Now For First Set (0.65 F), voltage across both capacitors will same,but charge divides,

q1/0.25 = q2/0.4 and q1+q2 =6.63

solving these , q1=2.55 C (across capacitor a)

q2 =4.08 C (across capacitor b)

D) and E) Now For second Set (0.85 F), voltage across both capacitors will same,but charge divides,

q3/0.35 = q4/0.5 and q3+q4 =6.63

solving these , q1=2.73 C (across capacitor c)

q4 =3.9 C (across capacitor d)
