Prelecture Concept Question 17.02
Part A
A negative charge moves in the direction of an electric field. Which of the following statements are true?
Check all that apply.
The electric field does negative work on the charge. The potential energy associated with the charge increases. The electric field does positive work on the charge. The amount of work done on the charge cannot be determined without additional information. The potential energy associated with the charge decreases. The electric field does not do any work on the charge.Explanation / Answer
When a negative charge moves in the direction of the electric field,
the field does negative work on it and the potential energy increases
Remember, the electric field is conventionally said to be in the direction that a positive charge would electrically "fall" from rest. Opposite that would be the direction that a positive charge would need to "climb" having an external agent move it.
The opposites occur for electrons. They climb in the direction of the Efield, and they fall opposite the direction of an Efield
hence first two statements are true remaining are false
