Question

Problem 1: a.)- d.) Consider the charges shown below which are traveling with velocity v in a magnetic field B. Each charge will experience a force F caused by the magnetic field. In the diagrams below draw the direction of the force on each charge cased by the magnetice field. If the force is given, draw the direction of the velocity necessary to give the force as shown. Use the symbols O and to represent vectors that point out of and ito the plane of the page respectively. b) c) d) e+ Problem 2: A long wire carrying 2 Amp lies in the rz plane and makes an angle of 45 degrees from the z axis. The wire passes through a uniform magnetic field B= (1+ 2j) T. Determine the components of the force on the wire per cm of length. (Hint: Breakdown the force law for magnetic fields into into its individual components and consider them separately)

Explanation / Answer

a) direction of F is out of the page for negative charge. (If charge is +ve then it will be into page)

b) direction of F is towards left (-x axis)

c) direction of F is towards right (+x axis)

d) direction of v is towards right (+x axis)

using right hand rule we can detemrmine the direction of F.

Right hand rule:
Take your fingers in the direction of B and thumb towards velocity V then your palm indicates the direction of magnetic force.

This is valid for postive charges only.

for negative charges the direction of force is opposite to the direction of palm .
