Stolons: Stolons are modified stems growing in random directions (NOT horizontally) just beneath the soil surface, generally have long internodes and may store food reserves. New plants originate from the nodes of stolon. Example: Irish/ white potato (Solanum tuberosum), Ranunculus,

Rhizomes: Rhizomes are modified stems growing horizontally below the soil surface and containing scale-like leaves and axillary buds at nodes. New plants develop from buds under suitable environmental conditions. Internodes of rhizomes can be short or long. It can be thick and fleshy due to stored food (ginger, iris) or slender (perineal grasses, some ferns). Example: ginger (Zingiber officinale), turmeric (Curcuma longa), Colocasia, banana.

Tubers: Tubers are modified stems specialized for food storage. In Irish/ white potato the ‘eyes’ are nodal depressions containing a group of buds in the axil of helically arranged scale-like leaves. In white potato, the tubers may arise at the tip of its stolon and at the end of thin rhizomes and consists exclusively of storage parenchyma (except vascular tissues) inside the periderm.

Corm: A corm is a large bud consisting of a conspicuous thick and fleshy stem surrounded by some papery leaves. The adventitious roots form at the base of the stem. Example: gladiolus, cyclamen, crocus.
