Question
If the plates are 2 inches square (exactly), and the hair is between the two plates at one edge (as shown), the experimenter measures 24 fringes within a distance of 20 mm. The light source has a wavelength of 550 nm. What is the diameter of the strand of hair? (Units required.)
I believe I did this question correctly, I used the formula 2t = m(lambda) where t = thickness, m = integer for the calculation. So anyways I believe that from the description of the problem that m is 24 because we see than many fringes (this is where I am getting confused a little bit). Anyways I am getting 6.6 e -6 meters for the diameter. Can anyone verify this or give any suggestions? Thanks!
Explanation / Answer
I think that m must be 23:
m=0 and m=1 and m=2 and ....... and m=23
>>>>> 2t = 23*550 >>> t = 6.325*10^-6 m
