A. Make and model of vehicle

Ford Mustang

B. Year of vehicle

2017

C. Starting Odometer Reading

3969.6

D. Ending Odometer Reading

4266.0

E. Miles Driven (show your math)

4266.0-3969.6 = 296.4

F. Gallons of Gas Pumped

8.357

G. Miles per gallon (show your math)

296.4/8.357=35.47

1. To drive to the Academy Sports Outdoors store at 1689 Eisenhower Pkwy, Macon, GA from GMC in Milledgeville GA is how many miles? Use an Internet site such as Google maps or Yahoo maps to find this out.

35.2 miles

2. How many gallons of Gas will the trip to Academy and back to Milledgeville use? Show your math calculations.

35.2 / 15.5=

2.27 gallons

4. How much carbon dioxide will the total trip produce? Show your math calculations.

Explanation / Answer

your calculation in part (2) is worng, as the average calculated above in the table is 35.47 Miles per gallon not 15.5 Miles per gallon.

So the total gas used = 35.2/35.47 = 0.9924 gallons will be used.

The Environmental Protection Agency starts with a guess for how many grams of carbon are in each gallon of gas. First, they determine how much carbon is in each particular kind of gasoline, and then they come up with a weighted average based on consumption levels for each variety. Using this method, they estimate that a gallon of gas contains, on average, 2,421 grams of carbon.

mass of C = 12 amu ; mass of CO2 = 12 + 2 x 16 = 44 amu

==> 12 units C produces 44 units of  CO2

==> 2421 grams C produces = 44 x 2421 / 12 = 8877 grams

That's enough to make 8,877 grams of CO2. They multiply that number by 0.99 to account for the carbon that doesn't react fully with the oxygen. Their result: 8,788 grams, or about 19.4 pounds. (The Energy Information Administration gives a slightly higher number—19.564.)

So the amount of CO2 the total trip produces = 0.9924 x 19.56 ~ 19.41 Pounds
