Explanation / Answer
For a velocity-time graph, the total distance travelled = area under the curve.
so, total distance travelled in 8 seconds is: area under the curve from t = 0s to t = 8s
=> D = [(1/2)(3)(15)] + [(5 - 3)(15)] + [(1/2)(15 + 5)(6.5 - 5.5)] + [(1/2)(8 - 6.5)(5)] = 66.25 m.
Total distance covered in the last 8.5 seconds =
D = [(1/2)(9 - 8)(13)] + [(13 - 9)(13)] + [(1/2)(16.5 - 13)(13)] = 81.25 m.
Average speed in first 8 seconds = total distance / 8 = 66.25/8 = 8.28125 m/s
Average speed in last 8.5 seconds = 81.25/8.5 = 9.5588 m/s
Average speed for the entire 16.5 seconds = (66.25 + 81.25)/16.5 = 8.9394 m/s
Net displacement in 16.5 seconds = 66.25 - 81.25 = - 15m
Average velocity during 16.5 seconds = displacement/time = -15/16.5 = -0.9091 m/s.
