1. A person travels from Orange County (elevation -sea level) to Denver, CO (elevation-5500 feet). This Denver, 3 days person's blood lactate levels in Orange County andOrayCy Denver are shown in the graph. Also shown is their blood lacate levels after spending three days in Denver. | … Denver 3 a) BIOCHEMICALLY what is the best explanation for Exercise the change in the lactate threshold when going from the OC to Denver? Your answer must address the possible mechanism by which the change occurs b) BIOCHEMICALLY what is the best explanation for the change in the lactate threshold after spending a few days in Denver? Your answer must address the possible mechanism by which the change occurs. c) Design an experiment to test your hypothesis in 1(b). Predict the results from your experiment if your hypothesis is true, and the results if you are incorrect. Make sure the include the appropriate controls in your experiment!

Explanation / Answer

At high altitude the amount of oxygen in the atmosphere decreases, therefore as the patient rises to high altitude (denver ) ananerobic metabolism start and thus leading to early lactate production

After spending 3 days in denver the lactate threshold rises in the person because of a process called acclimatization .

A lot of factors help in it :-

The primary action is of kidney ,the kidneys start excreting a large amount of bicarbonates and thus the ph decreased.

Increase erythropoietin production, increase in 2-3 DPG causes the shift of O2 dissociation curve to the right and this favour delivery of more oxygen ,in long term the capillary pressure increase ,number of mitochindria increase.

In case fructose is substituted for glucose ,the general condition of the patient will detoraite as fructose pathway is not regulated as the glucose pathway .(At PFK-1 step )

There fore the fructose floods the pathway with large amount of DHAP and G3PD ,which due to excess amount are converted to lipids and are stored and Therefore increased the risk of CVD in long term
