Question

Please answer each part fully for points. Show work, steps, etc.

Five identical light bulbs are connected as shown. Each bulb has a fixed resistance of 4 ohms. (Note: Light bulbs carrying more current are brighter than light bulbs carrying less current.) Calculate the total resistance between the two terminals. For the following parts of this question, assume that a 12-volt battery has been connected to the two terminals. Which light bulb (or bulbs) will glow the dimmest? Calculate the current delivered by the 12-volt battery to the circuit. Calculate the current through light bulb D. Suppose light bulb B is unscrewed from its socket. Now calculate the current through light bulb D.

Explanation / Answer

a) Equivalent Resistance=4+4+4(8)/(4+8)=8+32/12=10.67

b) Least current will flow from B and C as total resistance in the branch connecting B and C is 8ohm whereas in branch D is 4 ohm. As we know that I=V/R. hence more the R less is the current. As A and E are in the main branch of circuit, they will be supplied with current which is equal to the sum of current supplied to B and C and the current supplied to D.

c) I=V/R

By (a), R=10.67ohm

ie I=12/10.67=1.125A

d) 1.125 A will be divided among branch having B and C and branch having D according to R

as resistance in branch with B and C is 8 and in branch with D is 4 hence 2/3 of I will flow by D and 1/3 will flow by B and C

ie I in C=2*I/3=2*1.125/3=0.750 A

e) When B is removed this branch becomes an open circuit hence all the current will flow from D and hence the current value is 1.125 A
