Question
In the signaling of cells to initiate growth a host of genes designated immediate early genes become activated to initiate the growth process. What would happen to the the expression of these immediate early genes if Elk-1 was not able to to be dephosphorylated and why? In the signaling of cells to initiate growth a host of genes designated immediate early genes become activated to initiate the growth process. What would happen to the the expression of these immediate early genes if Elk-1 was not able to to be dephosphorylated and why?Explanation / Answer
Elk-1 is activated by MAPK pathway which phosphorylates this Elk-1. Normally in its resting state , this is found in co localization with mitochondrial proteins. , but on phosphorylation it localizes to the mitochondria in the neurons where it activates the immediate early genes which Serum factor dependent. Here it is having pro apoptotic role. Therfore if Elk-1 is not dephosphorylated , There occurs excessive apoptosis causing nerve damage.
