Question
Can someone please help with part B? Many thanks!
The drawing shows a horizontal ray of white light incident perpendicularly on the vertical face of a prism (crown glass). The light enters the prism, and part of it undergoes refraction at the slanted face and emerges into the surrounding material. The rest of it is totally internally reflected and exits through the horizontal base of the prism. The colors of light that emerge from the slanted face may be chosen by altering the index of refraction of the material surrounding the prism. Find the required index of refraction of the surrounding material for each of the following. (See the following table.) Only red and orange light emerges from the slanted face. (Give your answer to 4 significant figures.) All colors except violet and blue emerge from the slanted face. (Give your answer to 4 significant figures.)
Explanation / Answer
a)
n1 sin45 = n2 sin90
1.52 * 0.70711 = n2 * 1
==> n2 =1.075
b)
n1 sin45 = n2 sin90
1.531 * 0.70711 = n2 * 1
==> n2 =1.083
