BONUS: What diagnositic indicator might the doctor have seen if the patient had presented earlier?
An 19 yr old sophomore presented at the campus health center. He had recently returned from Europe after spending 12 days there doing an alternative Spring Break helping with the Special Olympics. Upon return on the Saturday before classes, he noticed that he was feeling a little achy, had a slight cough, sore throat, runny nose and watery eyes. He figured that he had picked from his travels. Since he had been gone for over a week, he needed to go to the grocery store and run some errands. Even though he wasn't feeling great, he figured - "it's just a cold", so he took some DayQuil and continued his regular activities, including going to class on Monday & Tuesday. On Wednesday, he was feeling worse, spiking a fever of 104°F. He also noticed that a blotchy rash had started to appear on his face at the hairline and behind his ears. After examining the student, the doctor informed the nurse to contact campus Health & Safety and that they would need to call the Department of Health and Senior Services. The doctor also asked the nurse to get him a pad of paper and a pen. "I'm going to need this young man to write down everywhere he has been for the last 4 days!” 1.)
