Question

For #1 I found the direction.. but I'm doing something wrong when I go to find the magnitude

1.) A vector has an x-component of ?20.5 units and a y-component of 34.0 units. Find the magnitude and direction of the vector.

2.) One of the fastest recorded pitches in major-league baseball, thrown by Tim Lincecum in 2009, was clocked at 101.0 mi/h (see the figure). If a pitch were thrown horizontally with this velocity, how far would the ball fall vertically by the time it reached home plate, 60.5 ft away?

3.) An airplane maintains a speed of 669 km/h relative to the air it is flying through as it makes a trip to a city 689 km away to the north.

Explanation / Answer

1) magnitude = sqrt(20.5^2 + 34^2) = 39.70 units

direction = tan-1(34/20.5) = 58.91 degrees below x-axis
