Question

I have tried this problem several time already. I'm not sure if I'm getting stuck on the math protion. Any help would be appreciated!

My first two entries were 7.23m and 8.8m & they were apparently both wrong.

A hot air balloon has just lifted off and is rising at the constant rate of 1.8 m/s. Suddenly, one of the passengers realizes she has left her camera on the ground. A friend picks it up and tosses it straight upward with an initial speed of 10.4 m/s. If the passenger is 2.5 m above her friend when the camera is tossed, how high is she when the camera reaches her?

Explanation / Answer

d_relative = 2.5 m

a_relative = - 9.8 m/s2

v_relative = 10.4 - 1.8 = 8.6 m/s

h = ut + at^2/2

2.5 = 8.6t - 9.8t^2/2

solving this

t =1.39 sec

so H =2.5 + 1.8 x 1.39 =5 m
