Question
In a sound interference experiment, two identical speakers are placed 2m apart. A microphone attached to a carrier sliding on a rail picks up the sound from the speakers at a distance of 5m. The two speakers are driven in phase by the same signal generator at a frequency of 700Hz
The numbers in the picture are wrong. The distance between the two speakers is actually 2m and NOT 4m. The distance from the speaker to the rail is 5m and NOT 400m.
(a) At the point of the microphone, would the microphone receive sound at maximum intensity or minimum intensity? Please show how you arrive at answer
(b) If you moved the microphone two meters straight up, would the intensity be maximum or minimum? Please show how you arrive at answer
Explanation / Answer
here,
D= 5m,
d= 2m,
Constructive inteference , r= nd sin(theta)
destructive interference , r= (n+1/2) sin(theta);
if y = D* n * (lambda)/d;
here for the initial position of microphone;
n=0;
=> constructive interference;
maxima
case 2;
y=2;
2 = 5*k* (350/700)/2
=>k = 1.59 ( approx)
it is of the form n+1/2 so
it is destructive inference;
hence mininma is fromed
