Question

Consider the following: Phaseolus vulgaris (common bean) is a plant that is grown mostly for the consumption of its seeds. This plant, like others, has optimal germination and growth requirements. Among the requirements are; photojournalism, soil pH, dormancy, humidity in the seed, temperature and soil chemistry. Consider, then, what would be the effect of Clorox® on the germination of the snap bean seed? With this question in mind, an experiment will be done using the steps of the scientific method, identifying dependent, independent and controlled variables. The experiment will last a week and will serve as the basis for the writing of a scientific report. Lab 3 will explain how to write a scientific report.

Explanation / Answer

The active ingredients of Clorox® is sodium hypochlorite, which can be used as a disinfectant. The application of Clorox® causes salinity stress on the applicants such as microorganisms, weeds etc. Seed germination is a vital stage for seedlings establishment, determining the successful crop production. Salinity hinders seed germination either by preventing or delaying germination through altered osmotic effects, or by making inviable the seeds through ion toxicity.
