Question

Please show steps, I am having trouble understanding this question...

A white billiard ball with mass mw = 1.44 kg is moving directly to the right with a speed of v = 2.86 m/s and collides elastically with a black billiard ball with the same mass mb = 1.44 kg that is initially at rest.  The two collide elastically and the white ball ends up moving at an angle above the horizontal of ?w = 48

Please show steps, I am having trouble understanding this question A white billiard ball with mass mw = 1.44 kg is moving directly to the right with a speed of v = 2.86 m/s and collides elastically with a black billiard ball with the same mass mb = 1.44 kg that is initially at rest. The two collide elastically and the white ball ends up moving at an angle above the horizontal of ?w = 48 degree and the black ball ends up moving at an angle below the horizontal of ?b = 42degree.

Explanation / Answer

initial momentum = mv = 1.44*2.86 in the direction of dotted line

final momentum in the direction of dotted line = 1.44 Vwcos 48 + 1.44 Vb cos42 = 0.96 Vw + 1.07 Vb

initial energy = 0.5*1.44*2.86^2 = final energy = 0.5*1.44*(Vw^2 + Vb^2)

so 2.86^2 = Vw^ + Vb^2

and 1.44*2.86 = 0.96Vw + 1.07 Vb

solving these two you will get Vw and Vb, velocity of white and black ball respectively

3) Final total momentum = 1.44*2.86 = 4.12 kg-m/s

4) Final total energy = 0.5*1.44*2.86^2 = 5.89 J
