Question

Part A

Would a G-flat (frequency 370 Hz) and a C played together be consonant or dissonant?

Part B

If the C were played on an organ pipe that was open at one end and closed at the other, which of the harmonic frequencies in the figure would be present?

a.) All of the harmonics in the figure would be present

b.) 262, 786, and 1310 Hz

c.) 524, 1048, and 1572 Hz

d.) 262, 524, and 1048 Hz

Explanation / Answer

" harmonic separations of 30 or 40 Hz seem to be quite unpleasant for most people." So we need to have less than 30 or 40 Hx beat freq for consonance. Observe that the closest to 370 Hz in C is 262 and difference=beat frequency= 108 Hz > 40 Hz So it is Dissonance. Time to run away! :) B) One side closed ended pipes give only frequencies with odd multiples of the fundamental frq (which is 262Hz) So we can hear 1*262, 3*262, 5*262,... = 262, 786,1310 Hz... (B option) Hope you like it :)
